Therapy has been described by some as “the talking cure”, and thus, individual therapy can be vital to your healing journey. You may be used to pushing your feelings aside or may have even believed that your feelings don’t matter. The truth is, what you think and feel does matter! Putting words to what you’re going may be an important part of the process.
You’ll meet one-on-one with a therapist to talk through how you feel, focus in on your strengths, explore ways in which you’ve been coping, and consider new strategies to improve your quality of life. As the expert on your own life, you’ll get to tell your own story and grow at your own pace.
When you call to make an appointment, we gather some basic information and get a bit of an understanding about what you need and how we can help. Before your first session, we’ll email you some forms to fill out so that you and your therapist can make the most of your time together.
What to Expect Your First Session
During your first appointment, you’re free to share more about what’s been troubling you and what steps you may have already taken to work on your problems. You may feel nervous–that’s to be expected! But your therapist is there to answer any questions you may have and to partner with you in envisioning your desired outcome.
The Therapy Process
Your therapist will employ a range of treatment interventions to help you recover from painful experiences and to help you feel a greater sense of control over your life. Strategies include but are not limited to:
- Practicing stress management and mindfulness techniques.
- Learning the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and transforming negative patterns.
- Trauma-focused techniques, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy and Seeking Safety.

Your treatment is customized to your needs and priorities, and your care goes at your pace. Education about your mental health and practical steps to maintain optimal wellness are integrated throughout your care. You will work with your provider to determine how often and how long you would benefit from meeting. Your therapist will check in with you about your progress and satisfaction with your care. As you feel better, it is natural to feel a need to meet less often.
